On January 9th, we got a call from a woman who said she had given $20 to a girl in front of the Safeway on Solano in Albany and gotten a receipt from us. Luckily, she called us to see if we had gotten the money. When I told her we had not, she mailed us the brochure and the receip.
We couldn’t believe it when we received the brochure and the receipt. Someone had copied one of our brochures from 2007 and written a receipt with our website, a former address, a disconnected phone number. They copied our text with new graphics and different fonts. The receipt was covered with tax ID and other numbers but they were all phony.
We also heard from someone in Oakland who picked up a white flyer and mailed a donation to us that was returned to her. Then we got a Facebook message from someone in Fremont who was also a victim of this scam and says they have been in front of the CVS in Fremont for months passing out that brochure and collecting money.
