I got a call from an anonymous donor wishing to give us $4000 to buy books for the East Bay Children’s Book Project. There was only one caveat. He told me we had to buy all the books from the Stefan Lyon foundation and referred me to the website. The website was amazing. A twelve year old boy had written two books and used all the proceeds to build schools in Africa. He had already completed one school and was working on finding funds to build another.
I called his Mom, Denise, who handles his affairs while he is in school, to arrange for delivery. We had a long talk and she offered to drop a few books in the mail and suggested that Stefan might like to deliver the books personally and meet the recipients. The books were just amazing. Stefan used a photojournalist approach to record the adventures of his pet rat Stitch.
Once I saw the books, I knew this would be an amazing event. Denise and I agreed that Stefan and Stitch would visit the EBCBP in June when school was out. So, on June 26, 2008, Stefan, Denise and Stitch arrived with a car full of books. Stefan agreed to read the books to the adults and children who attended and give free books to all of them. Stefan exhibited great self confidence and charisma as he introduced the crowd to his goals and told them how he wrote the books. The kids treated him like a rock star asking for his autograph and email address. He told them all they should start writing about their own adventures and many promises that they would.
Even the press who covered the event couldn’t help smiling. Stories appeared the next day in several newspapers, including La Oferta and the City Star
I know that Stefan who is now 13, has just finished his third book about Stitich’s adventures going green and completed another school in Africa. I look forward to hearing about his future success.
